Temporarily Inactive Medallions
Temporarily Inactive Medallions
On September 1, 2024, the process for temporarily deactivating medallions took effect per Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) 6.311.210.D and Director’s Rule For-Hire Transportation-05-2024. Inactive medallions – medallions revoked, relinquished, or otherwise held by the Director – were put into Temporary Deactivation status.
Per SMC 6.311.210.E, if a medallion owner fails to reactivate the medallion within 12 months from the effective date of the temporary deactivation, the Director shall issue a notice of retirement to the medallion owner. If the medallion is not reactivated within 60 days of this notice (by November 1, 2025) then medallion is retired, and an Order of Retirement is issued by the Director. The medallion owner may appeal the Order of Retirement within 24 days per 6.311.450. Failure to appeal within 24 days means the order of retirement issued by the Director is final.
If you would like a list that includes contact information for these medallions, you may request this information through a public disclosure request here: https://www.seattle.gov/public-records/public-records-request-center
If medallion owners do not wish to reactivate their medallions, then they may transfer (sell) them. There is currently a medallion exchange board at https://medallion-exchange.powerappsportals.us/ to help match medallion owners and buyers.
