Licton Springs

How it Bloomed

The Licton Springs P-Patch started as a student-driven initiative at North Seattle College in 1976. The land intended for the first community garden ended up as a school parking lot. Several years ago, the North Seattle College Sustainability Committee revived the dream and began an approval process to finally bring a community garden to our neighborhood.

Most of 2013 was spent building the garden. The community came together in rain or sunshine to dig up the land, build the plots, add compost to the soil, weed under the apple tree - and so much more. The Fries family built our large tool shed with the help of garden volunteers. It took more than a year to turn the small corner of North Seattle College into the large garden it is today.

2014 was our first year and what a success it was! The addition of a bee hive meant our plants were very productive. Work parties continued through the summer and social events like our Summer Smash and Fall Harvest were added to invite non-gardeners to our beautiful space to enjoy.

The garden is now focusing on adding native plants and common space to the garden such as benches and a picnic table as well as finishing out the previous plans of adding climbing plants t our entrances.
