Police Chief Confirmation Process

Police Chief

Kathleen O'Toole

Kathleen O'Toole was confirmed as Chief of Police by the Seattle City Council on June 23, 2014. Per the City Charter, the Seattle City Council has the responsibility to confirm or reject the nominee chosen by the Mayor. Councilmember Bruce Harrell, Chair of the Public Safety, Civil Rights & Technology Committee, led the confirmation review process, to help the Council determine whether the selected candidate is the right choice to lead the Seattle Police Department.

The Council's Public Safety committee conducted a thorough and transparent confirmation process by hosting a series of meetings to publicly ask questions of the candidate and by hosting an evening public meeting in a Seattle neighborhood to hear public feedback about the appointment.
