The Seattle Department of Human Resources provides services
for the City of Seattle's diverse workforce. We do this so that employees are managed fairly,
are well-trained, supported, and assigned job duties to accomplish City business
goals in a cost-effective, efficient and safe manner. Along with human resource
services, we also provide human resource tools, expert assistance and information
to our internal and external customers.
People are the City of Seattle's greatest asset. The Seattle Department of Human Resources
is responsible for centrally setting the pace for human resources services: identifying,
hiring, and retaining our dynamic, diverse workforce as well as developing and administering
our compensation and benefits program to create a quality employee experience.
City's Guidance on Gender Identity in the Workplace
This document defines the City of Seattle's expectations for welcoming and supporting transitioning, gender diverse and transgender City employees. It also serves as a roadmap for transitioning employees and their supervisors and coworkers. The goal is a safe and productive workplace environment for all employees.
These guidelines are consistent with the City's commitment to RSJ and Workforce Equity.

We created the new Workforce Equity Division in response to Mayor Ed Murray's Executive Order (EO) 2015-02: Workforce Equity Initiative. The order instructed SDHR and the Seattle Office of Civil Rights (SOCR) to expand the scope and reach of the City's efforts to achieve equity for City employees.

Paid Parental Leave (PPL)
The City of Seattle is excited to announce that effective January 1, 2017, eligible City employees may receive up to 12 weeks (480 hours) of paid leave to bond with their new child.

Paid Family Care Leave (PFCL)
Also effective January 1, 2017, eligible City employees may receive up to four weeks (160 hours) of leave to care for a spouse/domestic partner, child, or parent, or child or parent of the employee's spouse or domestic partner, who has a serious health condition.
