Seattle Youth Commission - How to Apply
Youth Commissioners must be between the ages of 13 - 19 and live or go to school in Seattle.
- Learn about local government, its structure, function, and roles
- Develop public-speaking, facilitation, organizing and communication skills
- Cultivate a deeper appreciation of cultural competency and inclusive civic engagement
- Learn from key community and City leaders and build new relationships
- Discuss issues and solutions with other Seattle youth and develop projects that address those concerns
- Make recommendations to the Mayor, City Council and City departments on issues that impact youth in Seattle
- Collaborate on a community project with other Youth Commissioners
- Plan an annual event (or several events) that connects youth to local government and topics they care about

Youth commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and City Council to work with City officials to uplift youth voice on issues young people in Seattle are facing, make recommendations on City policies, and learn about local government. Commissioners work collaboratively with peers, City staff, and community partners.
There are no fees to participate, this opportunity can count towards service hours for Seattle Public Schools graduation requirements.
Eligibility and Commitment
- Must be a young person age 13-19 who lives in Seattle or attends a Seattle school
- Able to dedicate 3-6 unpaid hours a month to attend regular meetings and participate in commission activities
- Willing to collaborate, learn, and represent youth voices across the city to serving a two-year term on the Youth Commission
- Consent and Authorization portion provided by Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, to be completed by Parent/Guardian (if under 18 at the time of application)
