What We Do

The Mayor’s Council on African American Elders (MCAAE) works to improve the quality of life for African American older adults in Seattle by advising City leadership, elevating community voices, and advancing equitable policies and programs.

Advocate for Equity

We champion policies that address racial disparities and promote healthy aging. Our current advocacy priorities include:

  • Affordable and stable housing  
  • Access to culturally relevant food and nutrition  
  • Support for caregivers  
  • Social connection and community belonging

Engage the Community

We create spaces for African American elders and their caregivers to share their experiences, identify priorities, and shape solutions. This includes community conversations, partnerships, and outreach efforts. 

Build Partnerships

We collaborate with community-based organizations, service providers, and other stakeholders to align efforts and expand resources that support African American elders.

Inform and Educate

We raise awareness about key issues affecting African American elders and connect community members to programs, services, and opportunities.
