About Audits

The Audits Team at the Seattle Office of Inspector General (OIG) provides independent, objective, and data driven assessments of police practices, systems, and operations through the performance of Yellow Book audits.

What Is a Yellow Book Audit?

OIG audits follow Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS), often referred to as the “Yellow Book.” The Yellow Book provides standards for objectivity, quality control, expertise, and evidence. GAGAS audits are built to provide a high level of assurance and are recognized across the government auditing profession for their rigor and credibility.

Peer Review

The OIG Audits Team is a member of the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA). ALGA provides support for external peer review to demonstrate full compliance with Yellow Book Standards every three years. OIG has passed both peer reviews to date.

Recognition of Excellence

OIG auditors have earned two Knighton Awards from ALGA. The Knighton award is one of the highest honors in the government auditing field, recognizing excellence in methodology, clarity, and impact. Below are OIG reports that received ‘Exemplary’ awards :
