PROJECT STATUS

Thank you Seattle, the Gatehouse is complete!

Mayor Greg Nickels and the Honorable Mistunori Namba, Consul General of Japan in Seattle opened the gates of the new Gatehouse at a grand opening celebration held on May 4, 2009. The celebration included a Shinto blessing, taiko drumming and a koto performance.

On June 16, 2008 a Jinchinsai ceremony which is a traditional Shinto ground pacification ceremony took place. The construction contract was awarded to the low bidder, A-1 Landscaping & Construction Inc.

Below are the project changes and steps taken to minimize the impact on vegetation associated with this project:

• The architects have sited the structures in such a way as to minimize impact to the garden and trees.
• The project will eliminate five mature trees and will be reusing the timber of four of them for the structure and using one as a nurse log.
• 10 x 3"+ Caliper trees will be planted.
• 13 trees and over 10 shrubs will be transplanted.
• Both the University of Washington and the Parks Urban Forester have worked together in efforts to minimize impact to the existing vegetation.

The Japanese Garden Entry Gatehouse will provide a new entry structure to the garden. The new entrance will be approximately 1,170 square feet and will include a ticket booth with direct access to the garden, a storage room, a meeting room, men's and women's restrooms with covered vestibule; and a maintenance area. BUDGET	The Pro Parks Levy provides $840,000 to cover costs of planning, design and partial construction costs. The remaining construction costs will be covered by private donations.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The University of Washington, the City and the Arboretum Foundation are working together on three projects to implement the Arboretum master plan. The three projects include the Japanese Garden Entry Gatehouse, the South Entry/Madrona Terrace Improvements and the Irrigation Mainline Project.

The Master Plan for �Renewing the Washington Park Arboretum� was adopted by the City and UW Regents in May 2001. The three identified projects are being funded by the Pro Parks Levy.

Description of Japanese Garden Entry Gatehouse
Design of an Entry Gatehouse for the Washington Park Arboretum Japanese Garden to include: a Ticket Booth with adjoining storage room for printed material and a patron wheelchair, and a door with direct access to the garden; a Storage Room that can be converted to the Gift Shop at a later date, or can be the Gift Shop initially if there is agreement on the operation; a Meeting Room with only one door from the restroom vestibule and storage closets; men's and women's restrooms with covered vestibule; and a Maintenance area with common area including kitchen, janitor's closet and mechanical Room. The overall footprint will be roughly 1,170 sf.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Public Meetings
At the first public meeting in February 2006 existing site conditions and potential designs for the new entry were discussed. At the second meeting in April 2006, a schematic design presented via drawings and a model that described the entry gate project and proposed landscape improvements were reviewed. After this meeting, Nakano Associates completed landscape refinements to the associated outdoor area around the entry structure. At the third and final meeting in September 2007, the public reviewed the design development drawings and direction of the project.
