Thank you, Seattle!
This Project is Complete!
Between May 12 and May 19, 2006 Parks, contractor Leajack Construction,
and hundreds of Starbucks and community volunteers conducted the "Ultimate
Park Makeover" - an unprecedented seven-day volunteer effort to make park
improvements that would normally take months to complete.
Improvements included installation of a new play area, renovation of the
playfield, renovation of the interior and exterior of the restroom, renovation
of the basketball court, renovation of the paths and entries, installation
of plazas with BBQs areas, and installation of benches and gaming tables.
Named in honor of community activist Powell Barnett, the 4.4-acre park had
begun to show its age. Community members, including Barnett's granddaughter,
Maisha Barnett, built public support and raised money, obtaining grants
to complete public process and design. The community's dedication attracted
the attention of Starbucks, which selected the park to receive additional
funding through the Starbucks Parks Fund.

Community members will continue working on park elements throughout the
summer/fall.
In September 2005, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved projects
to be funded through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity
Fund, including $200,000 for improvements to Powell
Barnett Park. This project will start in 2007.

| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
The community's vision for this project was to restore Powell Barnett Park
in Central Seattle. The project focused on increased capacity and safety
through design, maintenance and programming. Renovation of the children's
play area is one of the project goals.
Groups involved in planning for the park improvements include the Seattle
Girls School and Coyote Junior High.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The community obtained a Neighborhood Matching Fund grant
and worked with a landscape architect to conduct a public process and
develop a schematic design for the park improvements.
Community members nominated the project for the second cycle of the Pro
Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, and dozens of letters and testimonials in
support of the project were received by the Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee.
