Mountaineers Headquarters - Building 67 Redevelopment
Construction began in February 2008 and progressed over the summer. Substantial construction completion is scheduled for late October with a grand opening planned for early 2009.
In 2005, the City Council approved a 30-year lease of Building 67 to The Mountaineers. This building contains approximately 33,000 square feet and was originally constructed as a garage for servicing Navy vehicles. Improvements were made to the upper and lower levels and areas around the building, including the demolition of a lower level lean-to shed. A rock climbing wall and adjacent plaza was constructed for use by Mountaineers classes and the general public.
The Mountaineers has approximately 10,000 members residing mostly in western Washington. Joining the Magnuson Park family is an organization known for its volunteer efforts centered on outdoor recreation and conservation. Volunteers significantly contributed time and funds to the building and site renovations.
Even before construction officially started in February, The Mountaineers held 10 work parties that accumulated more than 332 people-hours of effort. Projects ranged from removal of a floating wood floor left by a previous tenant to salvaging large wooden beams from a storage shed. In total, these efforts resulted in the salvaging of about 110 sheets of plywood for alternative uses in the building – which saved $3,500 and diverted plywood from a landfill. The salvaged beams resulted in stunning wood canopies and interior wood millwork for the Headquarters. The former shed area is now the climbing plaza!
Groundbreaking was held on Presidents Day, February 18, 2008. Saltaire, Inc., was the contractor for entire project.
By mid-May many major milestones were accomplished. The large assembly area ceiling was sandblasted, the metal roof completed, the Climbing Plaza graded, and the boulder field completed. By mid-June more than 40 work parties had been held and volunteers had clocked more than 1,300 hours.
