Thank you Seattle voters! On August 5 voters in the City of Seattle approved Proposition 1 which created the Seattle Park District. The Park District will provide sustainable funding for Seattle Parks and Recreation, ensuring that our programs and facilities continue serving the people of Seattle – a wonderful legacy has been established.

The Park District will be governed by the Seattle City Council acting ex officio as the District Board. The City Clerk’s Office will be managing a Park District web page; we will provide a link to the District’s page when it is available.

The Seattle Park District Board will convene this fall, with one of their first actions expected to be approval of the interlocal agreement which establishes the cooperative relationship between the Park District and the City. The Mayor, on behalf of the City, signed the interlocal agreement in May, 2014.

Important information:

Ordinance relating to an interlocal agreement between the Seattle Park District, if formation of the district is approved by the voters within the City.

If you dont see a certain project on the map, it might be part of one of the 30 ongoing major maintenance programs that address smaller-scale projects throughout the city.

Citizens’ Advisory Committee

The Citizen's Advisory Committee, building off the Legacy Plan, has worked diligently since June to create a funding package that addresses the park and recreation needs of all people in Seattle.

The Committee:

  1. Looked at different funding options, including the potential use of a metropolitan parks district or property tax levy
  2. Examined how we allocate these funds and sought a balance among keeping facilities open, maintenance, and acquisition of new land and development of new facilities.

The Committee's made recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on a parks funding ballot measure to go the public for a vote in August 2014.
