About

Cal Anderson is located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood and is the hub of the community. Cal Anderson Park includes a fountain, texture pool and reflecting pool, promenade paths, landscaping, a shelterhouse, a plaza, a children's play area, a wading pool, a lighted sports field, and a number of oversize chess boards. This open park invites walking, sitting, reading, contemplation, informal sports in the meadow, and organized sports on the athletic field.

For walkers: the circumference of the park on the sidewalks, including Bobby Morris Playfield, is 3,325 lineal feet, or about 2/3 of a mile. An interior loop on gravel paths, using the old concrete gatehouse as the most southern edge and passing the cone water feature to the north, is 1,700 lineal feet, or about 1/3 of a mile.

Bobby Morris Playfield Turf Project

Seattle Parks and Recreation awarded the construction contract to FieldTurf USA for the renovation Bobby Morris Playfield.  They are on schedule to complete the project by August 12, 2016. This project replaces the aging synthetic turf. The project includes new infill and testing, any structural repairs to curbing or base required, and new soccer goals and nets. This pilot project will test the durability, safety, playability, maintainability and environmental health of a new synthetic turf infill material.  This project is funded by the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy and the Seattle Park District.

Seattle Parks is leading the way to find alternate synthetic turf field design sections/materials and deliver a safe, durable and playable athletic facility and experience – thus our Bobby Morris Playfield Turf Replacement Pilot Project For more information download the flyer.

All-Gender Restroom/Changing Room Study

The All-Gender Restroom/Changing Room Study recommended by the LGBT Task Force is complete. It evaluates best practices used by other jurisdictions and schools to address the need for safer restroom and changing rooms facilities for the transgender and gender non-conforming community. During the study, Seattle Parks and Recreation consulted with representatives of the transgender and gender non-conforming community in evaluating best practices.

The study also assessed several options to address needs for changes at the Cal Anderson Park restroom facility. Research revealed that direct entry from the public space into toilet stalls greatly increases safety and privacy. The option chosen for the restrooms at Cal Anderson retains the existing exterior architectural character of the building and changes the gendered, multiple stall restrooms into 4 separate direct entry toilet rooms that meet ADA requirements as well as the needs of fathers caring for their daughters, mothers caring for their sons and disabled people who have a caretaker of a different gender assisting them in the restrooms. The design of the remodel is underway with construction planned for 2017.
