Soundview Playfield Athletic Field Renovation

Updated: July 25, 2025

Summer 2025

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the groundbreaking event May 28, 2025!  We had a great turnout and enjoyed the partnership with Whitman Middle School and contractor, Terra Dynamics, Inc. The contractor mobilized in early May and anticipates completion by Fall 2025.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as we bring you this new field!

SPR is converting the existing natural turf playfield to an all-season, multi-sport synthetic turf playfield with lights, accessible pathways, and park amenities. This will include a new synthetic turf field with lighting that offers accessible softball, baseball, football, and soccer field. SPR and Terra Dynamics will work to minimize the construction impact on the neighborhood.

Project Description

This project includes the installation of synthetic field surfacing, lighting, ADA access and site improvements for the lower playfield. Seattle Parks and Recreation is investing in state-of-the-art synthetic turf systems that are safe, playable and durable. Additionally, we are investing in the highest quality energy-efficient field lighting, which minimizes spill light and glare off the field while providing performance recreational light. The project will improve accessibility to the field in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In the summer of 2020, the City of Seattle turned its focus to essential functions to address the pandemic and economic crisis, which required a significant reprioritization of resources. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) suspended some capital project work, including this project. In 2023, we started moving this project forward; however, because of budget constraints at SPR, the project was again put on hold.  The Seattle Park District Cycle 2 provided funding and helped move this project forward.
