The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) Urban Forestry section updated the Street Tree Ordinance (last revised in 1961). This document was drafted with input from an advisory panel of residents, commercial arborists, and City staff from several departments. The updated ordinance provides greater protection to street trees and codifies current practices and procedures.
The Seattle Municipal Code limits the number and size of trees that may be removed from a property. There are rules that apply when removing trees or vegetation from environmentally critical areas, undeveloped land, developed property, and developing property.
