Lap Pool

Must know how to swim and tread water. 

Age 16+, Beginner players welcome. 

We teach group swim lessons and personal lessons on a quarterly schedule, serving ages 6 months to adults.

A skill assessment is required to enroll in Advanced Swimmer, Swim Team Prep, Diving, or Summer Swim League.

Families on scholarships may register 1 week early. Please wait 1 week after general registration before enrolling in a 2nd class.

Welcome to Summer Swim League 2026

Summer Swim League (SSL) is a citywide competitive swimming program for swimmers age 7-18, coached by our lifeguard staff.

SSL bridges the gap between our swim lessons program and competitive teams including High School and USA Swimming leagues. Many of our lifeguards got their early swimming conditioning through SSL, too!

Important Dates

  • Registration opens: March 31, 2026.
  • Program dates: June 22-August 1, 2026
  • Dual Meets: Friday, July 10 and Friday, July 17.
  • Divisional Championship Meets: Saturday, July 25.
  • All-City Championship: Saturday, August 1.

Athlete's age is determined by their age on June 22, 2026 -- the first day of Summer Swim League.

Events are listed in the table below. Athletes are limited to 2 individual events and 2 relays per meet.

Events are separated into Boys and Girls races, although in some instances a mixed heat with boys and girls athletes may be run with athletes scored separately.

Qualifying to Compete

To qualify for any meet, swimmers must have completed 3 workouts that week.

To qualify for Dual Meets, swimmers must have also completed 10 workouts in total.

To qualify for Divisional Championships, athletes must have swam the same event in at least one Dual Meet.

To qualify for All City Championships, athletes must swim one of the fastest 12 times from the Divisional Championship meet.

All pools are allowed to enter one relay per event at the All City meet.

Super Deluxe Birthday Parties

You bring the cake, we supply the fun! 

Saturdays and Sundays:

  • Leisure Pool: 12:15-1:15 pm  
    • Up to 3 parties may share the pool
  • Room: 1:30-2:30 pm  
    • Additional room time may be available for a fee.

Price starts at $370 for 10 children. 

Add $15 for each additional child, up to 20 children per party.    

The party includes:  

  • Goodie bags for every child
  • Party-ware
  • Individual juice boxes
  • A “party guard” to supervise the children while in the water

Please provide your own plates, forks, napkins & non-alcoholic beverages for any adults attending your party.

Host your next celebration at Rainier Beach Pool! Rentals are available on Saturday evenings starting at 6:00pm.

  • Lap Pool rentals include Diving Boards and the Sauna.
  • Leisure Pool rentals come with the Water Slide, Spa, and Lazy River.
  • Or, rent the entire facility!

Hints and Rules

  1. Rental time must include your set-up and clean-up time. Renters are responsible for their own set-up and clean-up.
  2. Children younger than 6 or under 48" in height must be directly supervised by an adult in the water who is within arm's reach at all times.
  3. Swimmers must be at least 48" tall to use the water slide.
  4. Swimmers under 18 years of age must pass a swim test before using the deep end. Youth may take the test using a Personal Flotation Device (life jacket), available to borrow at the pool.
  5. All standard pool rules apply during the rental. The lifeguard on duty is the final authority on safety matters.

Making a Reservation

  1. Reservations must be made in person at Rainier Beach Pool. You may call ahead to inquire about availability, (206) 386-1925.
  2. Payment in full is due at the time of booking.
  3. Rentals must be finalized at least 2 weeks beforehand, to ensure staffing is available.

Refund Policies

  1. Cancellations 31+ days in advance receive a full refund, minus the booking fee and $50.
  2. Cancellations 15-30 days in advance will be charged the booking fee plus 50% of the rental fee. The damage deposit is refunded.
  3. Cancellations with 14 days notice or less will have no refund.

Lifeguard Jobs

Seattle Parks and Recreation is now recruiting Temporary Lifeguards for part-time hours at 8 indoor pools. Wage starts at $26.92/hr in 2026.

A current Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross is required. candidates must be at least 16 years old to apply.

How to Apply

  1. Get Certified! Sign up for an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.
  2. Get Hired! Three options:
    1. Apply online on Government Jobs (buttons above)
    2. Send an Aquatic Application, or resume and cover letter, to parksaquatics@seattle.gov
    3. Take your application directly to the Aquatic Center Coordinator at any Seattle Parks and Recreation indoor pool.
  3. Get Working! Once you are hired you will be required to pass a background check and a physical examination provided by the City of Seattle, as well as take the NW Lifeguard Test.

Aquatics Certifications

Lifeguard Training Certification

All City of Seattle lifeguards must have an active American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED.

The 30-hour blended learning course includes both online and in-person components. Completion of the course grants initial certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED. Certifications are valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites:

  • At least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
  • Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs, then swim an additional 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits for the treading water portion.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.  Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object, swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point and exit the water without using a ladder.  Swim goggles may not be used.

Lifeguard Renewal (recertification)

Lifeguard Renewal is a one-day course for those who have a current certification, or one that has expired in the last 30 days. It will extend the expiration date of your Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications for another 2 years.

Northwest Lifeguard Test

The Northwest Lifeguard Test (NWLGT) is a test of swimming ability and lifeguarding skills. The test builds on skills learned in the Red Cross lifeguarding course. It is meant to be taken after completing the Red Cross lifeguarding course, and is not a substitute for Red Cross lifeguard certification.

NWLGT is offered about once a month and must be taken prior to working your first shift (for permanent positions, you will have 90 days from date of hire).

The test is sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation, King County Parks, and the City of Covington.

Test elements include:

  1. 50 yards head high crawl stroke*
  2. Rescue tow medley and underwater swim*
  3. Spinal injury rescue in shallow water
  4. Submerged victim recovery and CPR
  5. Rescue of struggling victim

Grading Criteria

*There are two levels of NW Test certification. The full/beach certification, and modified/indoor pool certification. The time of the Head High 50 Yard Swim and number of breaths taken on the Underwater Swim in the Medley will determine your certification level. Register for Northwest Lifeguard Test

The Lifeguard Training Team is a FREE summer program designed to train and certify Seattle's youth in lifesaving skills. The eight week program for youth ages 15-18 will train participants to be lifeguards and build other important job skills. Seattle Parks and Recreation provides training, books, uniforms, and basic materials at no charge. The Lifeguard Training Team includes a full American Red Cross lifeguard training course, and much more! Participants get the opportunity to test for certification at the end of the program.

The Lifeguard Training Team is a tremendous opportunity for you to learn and grow, to build lasting friendships, and to acquire skills you'll use for the rest of your life. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete or world class swimmer to join. We just ask that you try your hardest, participate every day, and be part of the team. The instructors' provide a safe, well supervised and encouraging environment. The safety of the participants is our #1 priority.

2026 LTT Program Information

Participant Swimming Skills Pre-Test

Each participant must attend a swimming skills pre-tests before the first class. The pre-test is a prerequisite for the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. It is also your chance to meet the instructors and ask questions about the program. Please bring a swimsuit and towel and be prepared to swim. Pre-tests will take place at indoor pools in June, and take about 1 hour. Specific date and location options will be provided when applications are accepted.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Senior Lifeguards are required to hold a Water Safety Instructor certification from the American Red Cross.  The certification may be attained within 90 days of hire.

Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)

This approximately 30 hour course includes practical methods and theory for teaching lifeguarding skills. Candidates must have a current Red Cross certification in Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED. LGI-certified instructors can certify in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED. Completion of this course also extends your Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications for 2 years.

Lifeguard Instructor is a highly desired, but optional certification for Senior Lifeguards. LGI is required for Assistant Aquatic Center Coordinator and Aquatic Center Coordinator positions.

About

We are one of eight indoor pools operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Located on Rainier Avenue S, we offer a wide array of aquatics programs for all ages. Our lessons offerings include tot lessons (6 months to 4 years of age), kinder lessons, youth lessons, youth competitive stroke lessons, adult and senior adult lessons, and private lessons. Exercise classes include aqua jogging, hydro-fit exercise, and water exercise. We also offer family swim, public swim, and lap swim times.

Slide Swim Test and Rules

Children under 48" (4ft in height) must pass a swim test in order to use the slide.  Lifejackets cannot be worn on the slide.  Two people cannot go down the slide together (this includes a parent and child).  Children cannot be caught by parents at the bottom of the slide.

An adult must accompany children who do not meet age and height requirements. One adult may supervise only two children at a time.  Adults must remain within arm's reach of supervised children.

Children under 48" (4ft in height) OR younger than six years of age must be accompanied in the water by a paying adult. Child must fulfill both height and age requirements to be able to swim without an adult.
