Morgan Junction Park Addition

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Morgan Junction Festival on Saturday, June 22, 2019, and provided essential input for developing the new open space at 6311 California Ave SW adjacent to Morgan Junction Park. Over 200 community members stopped by our booth to provide their thoughts. Neighbors of all ages enjoyed iced soda drinks, fruits, and lollipops while reviewing three design options for the new site. Seattle Parks and Recreation staff and the Board & Vellum consultant design team were on hand to collect input and answer questions.

Your input from the first on-line survey and open house in 2018 was used to develop three concept designs which were presented at the 2019 festival. View the three concept options here. Options 2 (38%) and 3 (50%) received the stronger community preferences.

A second online survey was also posted July 8 - September 3, 2019, to gather more input, especially from people who were unable to attend the festival. The survey results are here:

The design team is working to refine the expressed community preferences into a preliminary preferred schematic design for the park expansion.

Also, drilling has begun in order to provide information about site contamination. Soil and groundwater sampling and analysis will continue through November. This will help us see what remediation will need to be done as part of park expansion. At this time, we are also working with City departments to determine what alley improvements will need to be made as part of park expansion.

We plan to have a third community meeting in early 2020 to present a preliminary preferred schematic design for the park expansion. We will also provide an update about the environmental remediation.

Project Description

In 2014, Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased the .28-acre property at 6311 California Ave SW, north of Morgan Junction Park, to expand the park and provide additional open space for this high-density neighborhood. The design will incorporate accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and additional park elements will be incorporated after gathering public input. We anticipate construction and in 2020-2021.

The addition parcel will not be accessible during construction.
