Nantes, France

Sister City since 1980

The Seattle-Nantes Sister City Association actively advances educational, cultural, and commercial ties between Seattle and Nantes, France.  We promote and administer citizen exchanges; award scholarships to Washington postsecondary students pursuing French language study in Nantes or Washington state; and educate the public about Nantes, the largest city in Brittany, and sixth largest in France. SNSCA welcomes new members interested in cultivating ties with our French counterparts.  We organize a variety of social and educational activities throughout the year, e.g., sponsorship of French films at the Seattle International Film Festival, a Crepe Dinner, participation in FrenchFest at Seattle Center, and maintaining Nantes Park, a 'pocket park' in West Seattle.

Seattle and Nantes share much more than their situation on the 47th parallel.  Like Seattle, Nantes is a port, and home to a large fisheries industry.  It is a center of aeronautics, and a hub of higher education.  And Nantes, like Seattle, is renowned for its quality of life and environmental ethic.  Time magazine declared Nantes 'The Most Livable City in Europe' in 2004; more recently Nantes received the designation of 'European Green Capital'.
