Federal Relations

The Federal Relations Director handles day-to-day management of the City's federal priorities with Washington state’s Senators and Representatives, other members of the House and Senate, the White House and other federal agencies. OIR coordinates with city departments to ensure the City's' positions and priorities are communicated to key federal elected and appointed officials.

Current federal issues of concern to the City include:

  • Preserving the municipal bond tax exemption and other local taxing authorities;
  • Supporting passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform;
  • Advocating for Seattle’s streetcar vision;
  • Coordinating possible federal involvement in the Elliott Bay Seawall Replacement Project;
  • Preserving a host of programs including the Community Development Block Grant program, homelessness programs, homeland security, and justice programs; and
  • Supporting a metropolitan/city focused federal transportation reauthorization.

The City of Seattle engages with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities, other big cities around the country, and other national associations to lobby Congress and the Administration on issues of mutual concern.
