The Seattle Commission for People with disAbilities cordially invites you to an afternoon of celebration and conversation, featuring opportunities to meet many true warriors on the ground fighting for disability rights justice. The event is on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 (light refreshments at 11:30a) and the program will start at 12:00-1:30p in the Bertha Knight Landes Room, 600 4th Avenue, Seattle, WA, City Hall. Please forward this email with attached flyer to anyone that you think may be interested in attending this event or may want an information table.

2014 Work Plan

Outreach Committee

  • Represent the Commission at three or four community events
  • Hold three Commission meetings in Seattle neighborhoods
  • Host community picnic
  • Update logo, and brochure

Public Safety Committee

  • Emergency preparedness; establish formal working relationship Emergency Operations Center. Develop an emergency policy/plan for the disabled community.
  • Build relationships with SPD
  • Continue SPD public safety forums
  • Monitor and respond to DOJ settlement/monitor

Issues Committee

  • Transportation:
    • Address proposed cuts to metro service.
    • Assess transportation issues based on feedback from transportation forums in 2013.
    • Continue to work with SDOT; Address parking placard abuse, proposed time limits for disabled parking, and proposed policy changes at the state level
  • Housing:
    • Engage disability community regarding housing discrimination
  • Employment:
    • Develop policy recommendations for the city to recruit, hire, and retain employees with disabilities
  • Public Access:
    • Address disability access issues with the waterfront design.
