During Construction Timeline Graphic

Construction timeline

Construction in you neighborhood began on Tuesday, February 21 with most of the work expected to be complete by June 2023. The project will be going on pause for a few months while we wait for light poles to arrive, currently anticipated for August delivery. Once we receive them, construction will resume and we will complete the final tasks of the project.

Construction Updates

The week of March 6, we made progress on the lower section of the project to construct the curb wall and prepare the area for new sidewalks. We also completed some underground utilities and drainage work. Thank you for your patience during this work.

Upcoming Work

The week of March 13, we’ll continue sidewalk work on the lower section of the project. We’ll also begin underground work for pedestrian lighting.

The week of March 20, we’ll move to the upper section of the project to begin sidewalk and lighting work. This work is similar to the work being done on the lower section and includes clearing, grubbing, and excavating. This work will be noisy. Once sidewalk prep is complete on the upper section, we’ll begin installing the new sidewalks on the lower and upper sections.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • Closure of Kenyon Way S to vehicle traffic. Detour route provided.
  • Detour route for people walking, rolling, and biking on Kenyon Way S
  • Typical work hours are between 7 AM and 5 PM
  • Noise, dust, and vibrations during work hours.
  • Construction equipment and materials staged in the project area.
  • Work is weather dependent and some activities may be rescheduled.

We want to express our appreciation for the feedback we've received from the community regarding our biking detour. As a result of this recent feedback, we've made updates to our detour map to provide better clarity for cyclists. The updated map is now available for you to view below. We kindly ask that you remain vigilant for detour signage and refrain from entering any work areas.

We want to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Your feedback has played an important role in helping us improve our detour plan, and we're grateful for your continued support as we work to make our project a success.

Project Overview

This project is funded through the Seattle Department of Transportation's (SDOT) Safe Rotues to School and Urban Trails and Bikeways programs and will enhance safety to Wing Luke Elementary for kids and families and make it easier to walk and bike in the neighborhood. Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school. We've made several improvements to calm traffic, increase visibility, and reduce the crossing distance at intersections.

Current work

Kenyon Way S

Installing new sidewalks can help to make our neighborhoods walkable and more connected. We are prioritizing this location to fill a gap in the sidewalk and urban trail network, enhancing safety for kids and families walking, rolling, and biking to Wing Luke Elementary School. By 2023, we will construct a new, wide sidewalk from the bottom of the hill up to the top of the hill on Kenyon Way S.

Project elements include:

  • Installing a multi-use sidewalk with handrails and pedestrian lighting
  • Building new curb ramps including a multi-use curb ramp to connect the Chief Sealth Trail
  • Creating two new seatings areas on Kenyon Way S (part of the Kenyon Neighborhood Greenway)
  • Changing traffic circulation to one-way, eastbound on Kenyon Way S

Completed work

S Kenyon St and 37th Ave S

We prioritized this location to fill a gap in the sidewalk and urban trail network, enabling kids and families to walk safely to Wing Luke Elementary School. Project elements completed include:

  • a new sidewalk
  • a midblock raised crosswalk on S Kenyon St, and
  • a new connection to Chief Sealth Trail
