Ballard Playground Athletic Field Lighting Replacement

Updated: September 21, 2021

Fall 2021

The primary improvement project which included new synthetic turf infield and subsurface field restoration, improving accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards along with field light poles and light replacement has been placed on hold, due to COVID 19, except for the field light poles and light replacement. Seattle Parks and Recreation is invested in installing the highest quality energy-efficient field lighting which minimizes spill light and glare off the field while providing performance recreation light. Construction began September 7, 2021. The contractor, Service Electric Co., Inc., anticipates substantial completion by early January 2022.
The playfields are closed during construction.

Location

Ballard Playground, 2644 NW 60th Street 98107

Budget

$1.3 million for the lighting replacement project is funded by Reserve Funding and Real Estate Excise Tax.

Schedule

Design: Completed
Construction: September 2021 - Early January 2022

Project Description

Why are we doing the playfield poles and lights?

  • The replacement of the old and aging wooden poles has been prioritized as a health and safety project for the community. The wooden poles require immediate attention by Seattle Parks and Recreation.

What Special Considerations Are Needed for this Project?

  • We value our trees!
Ballard Playfield is graced with two beautiful Heritage Trees along 26th Avenue NW
    • Special care will be taken, in both project design and construction, to reduce impacts to the two Heritage Trees
  • The new field lighting technology will minimize glare and spillage, and result in fewer poles, better energy efficiency, and reduced light impacts to neighbors

During construction, the contractor will need to close the playfields. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor hired for the project will work to minimize impact to the neighborhood and provide ample notification to the Community Center, ballfield schedulers and community users.
