Contractor LW Sundstrom has completed demolition of the old play area. Sitework will be ongoing, weather permitting as we install drainage and underground work for the new play area.

The comfort station will remain open during construction. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor will work to minimize impact to the neighborhood and park during construction.

Seattle Parks and Recreation awarded the construction contract for the play area to L.W. Sundstrom. The project will replace the play area, exp[and the north basketball court and replace the goals at both courts.

Additionally in Phase 3, the irrigation contractor will complete the irrigation replacement along the east side of Othello Park.

November 2018 - Play Area Renovation

Construction Impacts
During construction the contractor will need to close the play area and basketball courts. The closures are expected to begin December 3, 2018 and will close off access to the play area and courts. The comfort station will remain open during construction.

June 2018 - Irrigation Replacement

Hydroseeding of areas disturbed by the installation of the new irrigation system began on June 14, 2018 in the south end and meadow areas of Othello Park, this work was completed June 18.  Watering will begin each evening starting at 9:00 pm and run overnight, cycling through each of the areas covered by the new irrigation system so we can grow the new grass in at Othello Park. View photos of the hydroseeding here.

May 2018 - Play Area Renovation

The Othello Park Phase 3 Play Area Replacement project will be advertised for public bid this month, May. The play area work will begin on the east side of Othello this summer. The comfort station will remain open during construction and access will be maintained for Out-of-School Time and Summer Food program.

May 2018 - Irrigation Replacement

The contractor continues to make progress on the Othello Park Irrigation project.

The crew is installing heads on the new system and removing rocks and construction debris uncovered while digging for the new water lines. Once we have water on and good coverage we will begin placing topsoil, plant grass and begin watering. The meadow is the highest priority and crews are working to make sure we have grass established for the August Othello Park Festival.

March 2018 - Irrigation Replacement

Othello Park irrigation work is progressing. The contractor has worked from the south out of the meadow and up around the west side of the park. Large chunks of concrete and brick were discovered in the soils and will be removed so we can properly backfill the trenches and restore the grass.

If weather cooperates we will have the new irrigation system in place for most of Othello Park within the next month.

King County 2013 Park Levy provides $500,000 for the play area renovation.

The Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Fund allocates $547,000 for the planning, design and construction of basketball court improvements, wayfinding medallions, and landscaping improvements that incorporate CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) goals.

Both projects are combined under one construction project to provide for greater efficiencies and reduce construction impacts to the park.

Project Description

This project was selected for the second round of Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Funding. The application received in this community-initiated process is a preliminary concept and the final design may be constrained by the project budget. All projects will go through Park’s public involvement procedure which includes public meetings and community input. They will also go through an internal Parks process to ensure the most effective implementation.

The Othello Park Improvements project includes playground renovation, basketball court improvements, new benches and game tables, pathway way-finding markers and miscellaneous pavement replacement.  The play area renovation will include a central plaza seating area, new play equipment and a new sand & nature play space.  The existing zip line will remain and swings will be replaced with new equipment to meet current safety standards.

The Park Improvements project is being completed in conjunction with a separate project to upgrade the park's irrigation system.
