The following information is for candidates who submitted an application for Firefighter in 2019. The 2019 application period closed November 26, 2019, and the 2020 Firefighter Register was established on March 3, 2020.

Tentative Schedule

Mar 2020: Begin pre-employment screening for recruit class #113.

Apr 2020: Candidate physical ability testing (CPAT).

May 2020: Fire Chief interviews.

Jun - Jul 2020: Conditional offer, background check, medical & psychological evaluations for recruit class #113. Begin pre-employment screening for recruit class #114.

Aug 2020: Recruit class #113 begins. Fire Chief interviews for recruit class #114.

Sep - Oct 2020: Conditional offer, background check, medical & psychological evaluations for recruit class #114.

Nov - Dec 2020: SFD-led EMT course for conditionally-offered candidates.

Feb 2021: Recruit class #114 begins.

Projected Hiring

The 2020 hiring register was established on March 3, 2020. We anticipate this register will be used to fill recruit classes in Aug 2020, Feb 2021, Aug 2021 and Feb 2022.

CPAT

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is administered after the Testing Process and hiring register is established. Eligible candidates will receive a paid CPAT voucher.

You should engage in advanced physical training prior to the CPAT, targeting muscle groups used in lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and other actions related to Firefighter tasks. A workout program may include distance running, sprints, rowing, stair climbing with weight pack and weight lifting to develop both the upper and lower body.Download/View the Candidate Preparation Guide for information about specific physical training and weight lifting in preparation for the CPAT.

The CPAT exam is comprised of eight stations that are completed in one continuous sequence. The test is pass/fail. Download/view the CPAT Orientation Guide for detailed information.
