Interagency Health

We contract with Group Health Cooperative to provide access to physical and mental health care for students at the Interagency Academy. We call this category Interagency Health.

The Interagency Academy is an alternative public high school with multiple locations throughout Seattle. The school partners with community-based organizations to provide unique learning environments for its students, many of whom also interact with chemical dependency and mental health professionals, probation officers, and case managers. Compared to students in other Seattle public high schools, Interagency Academy students:

  • are more likely to be eligible for free/reduced lunch and special education services
  • are more likely to drop out of school
  • have a higher student turnover; most students enrolled in the fall were enrolled at a different school the previous fall

Interagency students' health needs are similar to other adolescents, including sexual health check-ups, family planning, mental health access, medication management, chemical dependency, and guidance on building and maintaining healthy relationships. However, these unmet health needs are more common and severe among Interagency students and are often accompanied by other life challenges such as unstable housing and gang concerns.

The Interagency School-Based Health Center provides services to students at all sites, either at the main clinic at the Columbia School or on-site.

Community partners working at various sites include:

  • City of Seattle
  • King County International Airport
  • King County Youth Service Center
  • University District Youth Center
  • Youngstown Cultural Art Center
  • YouthCare
