Colman Dock

Review Status

We reviewed the Colman Dock redevelopment project several times from 2005 to 2007. In February 2014, we denied approval of the concept design for Colman Dock. Most recently, on August 4, 2016, we approved the updated schematic design.

Project Description

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Ferries (WSF) are proposing to upgrade Colman Dock. Colman Dock is located on Alaskan Way in downtown Seattle. The dock provides ferry services for the WSF fleet serving Seattle, Bremerton, and Bainbridge Island. The facility also provides passenger ferry services for King County’s ferry routes to Vashon and West Seattle.

WSF is proposing significant upgrades to Colman Dock:

  • Replacing aging timber piers
  • Re-orienting the existing overwater dock coverage areas
  • Constructing a new terminal
  • Creating a new entry building fronting Alaskan Way
  • Replacing an overhead passenger walkway

WSF’s long-term plans include retail spaces between the entry building and terminal and a new passenger-only facility for King County’s passenger ferries.
