About Tim

Council position: 8
In office since: 2008
Current term: 2016-2017

First elected in 2007, Councilmember Tim Burgess was re-elected in 2011 and 2015. Tim chairs the Council's Finance Committee.

A Seattle native, Tim has been involved in local community and government matters for 50 years as a radio journalist, Seattle police officer and detective, global anti-poverty worker and small business owner. He chaired his neighborhood community council and served 12 years on the City's Ethics and Elections Commission.

On the Council, Tim has spent most of his time on issues related to children. Under his leadership, Seattle became the fourth major U.S. city to fully fund the Nurse Family Partnership, a home visitation program for low-income families that The New York Times calls America's best anti-poverty program. He was the lead architect of the Seattle Preschool Program that will eventually offer high-quality preschool to all of the city's three- and four-year olds.
