Seattle Women's Commission 2013 Workplan
Overarching Efforts
The Seattle Women's Commission will work closely with the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs and with organizations in the returning veterans communities to be make certain that immigrants, refugees, and returning female veterans are being served appropriately by the Commission's work on each work plan item
Economic Opportunities
Work Plan Item:
Expand Paid Sick and Safe Time outreach and education to workers and businesses in the Seattle area, including Seattle employees who reside in and outside Seattle, and promote healthy schools.
Promote economic equity for women in Seattle.
Reduce barriers to the City's child care assistance program.
Health Disparities
Work Plan Item:
Research and make policy recommendation on the impact of food deserts on women and children in Seattle, with a specific focus on access to WIC providers.
Monitor State legislation and city issues important to women's health including breastfeeding disparity, support for the Reproductive Parity Act, and additional funding to Medicaid and Medicare.
Continue efforts to reduce infant mortality in communities of color by addressing the social determinates of health in collaboration with community coalitions. Investigate the feasibility of the community officer crib distribution program within the Seattle Police Department.
Housing and Homelessness
Work Plan Item:
Continue to advocate eliminating barriers to housing for survivors of domestic violence, with an emphasis on the tenant screening process.
Continue to advocate for homeless women and children, with a specific focus on children the deportation system has left without a parent in the United States, LGBT, homeless youth, and seniors.
Participate with Department of Planning and Development as it develops its interior residential rental inspection program and advocate for cultural and gender sensitivity during inspections.
Violence Prevention:
Work Plan Item:
Monitor Police accountability measures and advocate for women throughout all city measures to improve police officer accountability.
Promote awareness and educate women on the process for obtaining stay away order from the courts.
Monitor City of Seattle's actions with regard to violence against women and advocate against violence toward young women and girls.
