Work Plan

Civic Participation: Provide greater opportunity for civic participation to women in the City of Seattle in order to educate and encourage them to impact the policy making process.

  • Organize and co-host 2nd annual Women's Summit.
  • Lend support and provide publicity to existing civic participation programs in the city.
  • Collaborate with and support organizations in organizing, publicizing, delivering and participating in "how to lobby" training and lobby days related to issues affecting women in the City of Seattle.

Dissemination of Information: Gather and disseminate information relating to women and women's organizations in the City of Seattle in order to broaden the reach of currently existing resources and to continue to inform and educate women on how to impact policies that affect them.

  • Gather and publish information regarding the status of women and different issues on SWC website (such as status of women, poverty, economic cost of domestic violence, pay equity, homelessness, women's success stories, immigrant and refugee women).

  • Gather information and maintain website as a resource and information clearinghouse regarding events, issues and opportunities for women in the City of Seattle.

Legislative Advocacy: Research and advocate in support of or against issues that may affect women in the City of Seattle in order to educate legislators on the impact of proposed legislation on women.

  • Raise awareness about and respond in support of or opposition to issues that affect women by writing letters to City of Seattle Mayor, Council and other government officials.


  • Write opinion/editorial letters regarding issues concerning women in the city of Seattle.


  • Write letters to city officials, legislators to advocate for women's issues.

Education and Training: Provide education/training for city officials and constituents on issues that impact women in the city of Seattle in order to keep the realities of women's issues central in the development of policy and programs.

  • Work with organizations to assess interest/needs/role of SWC in developing/providing training.


  • Work with existing city projects regarding domestic/dating violence in schools.


  • Explore a project where city officials and local policy makers can share experiences with constituents.


Nominations: Establish a nominations committee to monitor membership and fill vacancies on commission as needed in order to ensure that the Seattle Women's Commission continues to carry out its functions at full capacity.

  • Work with City of Seattle Mayor and City Council to fill commission vacancies with qualified women.


  • Work with Executive Committee and full commission to fill officer positions on commission in a timely manner


Executive: Establish an executive committee in order to provide leadership and direction for the commission.
