West Lake Union Improvement Project Construction Update Week of October 21
Progress Report: Last week the Crockett street outfall was successfully lowered and water quality testing for re-connecting the watermain has begun.
Continuing Work:
· View deck work will continue at Crockett Street. The geoweb work will begin this week. Note: The geoweb is the infrastructure platform that is used to prevent possible landslides limit erosion of the shoreline beneath the view deck.
· Full clearance of the parking lots between Crockett and Blaine streets will take place this week in order to prepare for grinding of the existing asphalt. Removing existing asphalt allows City survey crews to put down stakes for final grading process. Grinding will begin on Thursday, October 24 in preparation for paving and striping of the lots. Crews will attempt to re-open partial parking for lots in this area Friday, October 25 for the weekend only. Beginning Monday, October 28, crews will fence off the lots completely for two weeks during the grading, paving and striping phase of construction.
Note: The time frame for opening the parking lot will depend on weather and the pace of the work. Some areas of the parking lot may be opened earlier than others.
Lane Closure/Traffic: One southbound traffic lane on Westlake Avenue North between South Lake Union and the Fremont Bridge will continue to be closed until Feb. During the storm mainline work there will be a lane shift heading north between the 1700 and 2400 block of Westlake Avenue North. There will be work crews on both sides of the road. Please use extreme caution.
Some General Impacts: Limited and sometimes no parking in the specific areas under construction; periodic limited access; lane closures and traffic flaggers on Westlake Avenue North; noise from large construction vehicles; increase in dust and mud during construction.
During construction, impacts to the surrounding community and thru traffic are to be expected. The City of Seattle requests patience and cooperation from travelers and residents. City departments will work with the community in efforts to minimize impacts and disturbances.
Tips/Suggestions: If you're not sure where to park, ask one of the flaggers on site for suggestions. They are familiar with the work going on and can direct you to areas that are available.
Please be aware of speed limits within the construction zones, and signage that may reflect current conditions of the construction area. When driving or walking, please watch for work crews and equipment along Westlake Avenue North.
NOTE: 24 hours notice is the city requirement for notification of "no parking" areas. Although we will do our best to notify owners of parked vehicles, if you work or live in the area, please pay attention to the NO PARKING signs to ensure your vehicle is not ticketed or towed.
The construction for the West Lake Union Improvement project is expected to last approximately until February 2003. Due to the nature of construction, schedules are likely to change. City departments will keep the community informed of the most current schedule.
