West Lake Union Improvement Project Construction Update Two Week Outlook
Location/Work: Crews will continue outfall work through the week of March 18th. Track and trestle removal has been completed between the 2700 block and 2100 block of Westlake Avenue North. Work will continue on the Halladay Street outfall, and prep work will begin for the Blaine outfall. Crews will be cleaning the street edges, clearing grubbing, curb and gutter work and installing drainage pipe. Storm sewer construction will continue as well.
Seattle Public Utilities water crews will continue working to renew the water services located inside the project area. They will be working in the 2400 to 2100 blocks over the next two weeks.
Lane Closure/Traffic: Beginning the week of March 18th, one southbound traffic lane on Westlake Avenue North between South Lake Union and the Fremont Bridge will be closed for approximately nine months. The project contractor requires the use of the northbound curb lane during the construction period. Since traffic volumes are greater in the northbound direction, the approved traffic control plan requires the contractor to maintain two northbound travel lanes. The contractor will shift the two northbound lanes to the left, requiring new lane markings along Westlake Avenue North to allow one northbound traffic lane to travel in the current southbound lane. Once the project is completed, two lanes will be open in each direction.
Time: Work crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There may be some weekend work.
Some General Impacts: Limited parking in the specific areas under construction; periodic limited access; lane closures and traffic flaggers on Westlake Avenue North; noise from large construction vehicles; increase in dust and mud during construction.
During construction, impacts to the surrounding community and thru traffic are to be expected. The City of Seattle requests patience and cooperation from travelers and residents. City departments will work with the community in efforts to minimize impacts and disturbances.
Please note that Construction for the West Lake Union Improvement project is expected to last approximately 12 months. Due to the nature of construction, schedules are likely to change. City departments will keep the community informed of the most current schedule.
NOTE: 24 hours notice is the city requirement for notification of no parking areas. Although we will do our best to notify owners of parked vehicles, if you work or live in the area, please pay attention to the NO PARKING signs so that your vehicle is not ticketed or towed.
