Success Stories

A few years ago, the City of Seattle completed three intensive rounds of a study which proved that households can live happily - and save lots of money - with one less car. The demonstration provided the groundwork for the current One Less Car Challenge, by showing how effective and helpful this kind of program can be.

Below are some of the results from the three intensive demonstration rounds. Take a look and learn more about others’ experiences getting around with one less car!

Results from Demo Study III - 2002

  • 41 households participated and saved 25,763 miles of neighborhood traffic in just 9 weeks. More results.
  • Quotes from the participating families on their experiences.
  • A summary of what happened during the 3rd round.

Results from Demo Study II - 2001

  • Information on the amount of trips, miles and pollution that the 23 families were able to reduce in just 6 weeks.
  • Quotes from the families on their experiences.
  • Media information can be found in the September 2001 press release.
  • More information on how much money the families saved and how they plan to get around in the future, as well as what participants agreed to do when they participated in the project.

Results from Demo Study I - 2000

  • Five households sold their car before the program actually started once they added up how much money they could save! Calculate how much your household could save using our handy Car Cost Worksheet.
  • Information on the amount of trips, miles and pollution that the 22 families who participated were able to reduce in just 6 weeks.
  • Quotes from the families and the project manager can be found in the March 2001 press release.
  • More information on how much money the families saved and how they plan to get around in the future, as well as more information on what participants agreed to do when they participated in the project.
