Your actions make a difference…What is the city doing to help reduce pollution?
The city encourages its employees to use the bus by:
- Sharing the cost of bus passes and bus tickets
- Providing a guaranteed ride (taxi) home for emergencies or unexpected overtime
- Providing benefits for carpoolers and those using other modes of travel than driving alone
The city offers several drive-less programs to the public:
- Commuter Cash – Participants earn cash for saved drive-alone trips
- One Less Car – All kinds of benefits are available if you go without a car for a month, or sell a car
- Cut a Couple Car Trips - You can reduce your driving by two trips per week, right? When we all do our part, we make a big difference. Report your saved car trips and you could win some great prizes!
The city reduces pollution by managing traffic such as:
- Synchronizing traffic signals to keep vehicles moving steadily to reduce idling
- Installing signs asking motorist to turn off their engines while waiting during bridge openings
- Implementing “Complete Streets”, which considers the needs of all modes of travel when designing streets and repaving
- Implementing actions in the Bicycle Master Plan
- Implementing the Seattle Connections Transit Master Plan
- Drafting a Pedestrian Master Plan
The city is turning their vehicle fleet green:
We are working toward a fleet that is 100 percent clean and green. Already we have:
- 524 advanced technology (hybrid - 384 vehicles and 140 alternative fuel/ compressed natural gas) vehicles
- 47 electric off-road vehicles (22 scooters, 27 Segways, three bicycles, four electric bicycles and one electric vehicle)
- 699 diesel-powered vehicles mostly running on biodiesel
Drive less and reduce your carbon footprint
by 2,000 pounds of CO2.
