City Efforts and Reports

The City of Seattle recognizes its role in addressing the increasing needs and complexity for mobility solutions in the Puget Sound region, and is involved in many projects around Seattle through the Planning, Policy, and Major Projects Division of the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Among many solutions are the City's Trip Reduction and Transportation Demand Management (TDM) efforts. In addition, various programs intended to produce Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) are already in place such as King County Metro's Employer Commute Services and Jobseeker Transportation Program. The Planning, Policy, and Major Projects Division is pleased to be engaged in the pioneering field of non-commute trip reduction. The links to your left provide details of what's been done, and what's underway.

Way to Go, Seattle! acts as an umbrella for several programs to improve transportation systems and provide more transportation choices, many addressing non-commute trip reduction. One of our signature programs is the "One-Less-Car" Project that consists of several components:

  • The "One-Less-Car" Demonstration Study which was conducted in 2000, 2001, and 2002 where over 80 Seattle households agreed to park one of their cars for six or nine weeks and keep a diary of how they were able to get around during that time.
  • The "One-Less-Car" Study Replicability Package which provides detailed methods, results, and products that can help other cities and municipalities start their own Way to Go Demonstration Project.
  • The One Less Car Challenge is the beginning of a public education campaign that asks Seattlelites to reduce one million miles of car trips while saving money, reducing stress, and being part of the transportation solution.
