Outside Influences

Landscape pattern and human disturbance
Grizzly bears require very large areas with little or no human disturbance. Urban and suburban development precludes grizzly bears from living in most of western Washington. Heavy recreational use of forest lands in the western Cascade Mountains would likely also limit habitat availability there. Because grizzlies have such large home ranges and there is a relatively high level of human activity throughout most of western Washington, the potential for significant numbers of grizzly bear living here is limited.
