Yard Waste Cart Questions & Answers

Collection Containers

Yard and food waste subscribers will receive a new 96-gallon, wheeled cart provided by the City of Seattle. You will be able to set out your cart, plus one 32-gallon container, for a total of 128 gallons, every other week, year round.

Options for your additional 32-gallon container are listed below.

Purchase a can
You can purchase a rigid container with a lid and handle at many local retailers. Maximum size is 32 gallons or 60 pounds when full. Label your cans "yard waste," and fill them loosely, so that they will empty easily when turned upside down.


Purchase a reusable yard waste bag
You can purchase reusable polyethylene bags for yard waste disposal online from BagIt System (link below) or at the stores listed below. It stands open by itself, has snap-shut flaps, stores flat and is reusable and durable.

  • • Kraft paper bags, available at many home and garden retailers
  • • Bundles tied with twine. Each bundle of yard waste can be up to 4 feet in length by 2 feet in diameter. Do not use wire, nylon cording, or plastic banding to tie these bundles.
Do not use plastic bags
Plastic bags have been banned from use for yard waste disposal for due to contamination and odor problems. The Seattle/King County Health Department has banned composting facilities from receiving yard waste in plastic bags.


Biobags have been recently approved by Cedar Grove to go into the yard and food waste carts. Biobags are 100% compostable and 100% biodegradable and can be found at PCC, Whole Foods, Goods for the Planet and Madison Market.
