Start or Stop Service

Seattle Public Utilities residential customers who subscribe to yard and food waste collection service will have yard waste (such as leaves, grass, and plant trimmings) collected for composting. Compostable paper and food scraps can also be placed in your yard waste cart provided by the City of Seattle.

Yard and food waste service
  • • Is a one year minimum commitment
  • • Costs $10.70 per bill ($5.35 per month) in addition to your regular garbage service
Yard and food waste collection schedule
Yard waste is now collected every other week, on the same day as your garbage, year round.

How much to set out
You may set out your 96-gallon cart provided by the City of Seattle, plus:

  • • One container, not over 32-gallons or over 60 pounds.
  • • A bundle up to four (4) feet in length by two (2) feet in diameter.

You will be charged $1.60 per 32-gallon container or bundle in addition to your new cart and 1 32-gallon container or bundle.

Yard and food waste containers
For any yard waste that does not fit in your new 96-gallon cart, you must supply your own yard waste containers. You can use:

  • • A 32-gallon can with handles, purchased from a home or garden store.
  • • Heavy paper bags, available at many home and garden retailers.
  • • Bundles tied with fiber twine up to 4 feet long by 2 feet in diameter. Do not use wire, nylon cording, or plastic banding to tie these bundles.
Do not use plastic bags or city provided garbage cans for yard waste. It will not be collected.
