Reasons to Reuse
Why Reuse ?
Reuse saves money. It preventing waste before it occurs. It is better than landfilling, and even preferable to recycling since it requires less resources. Finally, it supports a significant local economy - reuse operations tend to be owned and run locally. Depending on the situation you can repair, rent, buy/sell or donate used goods.

Here are some reasons for each:
Repair
- • Repair is often a lot less expensive than replacement, and can improve the performance, safety, and/or efficiency of a product. Many older products are better constructed than those on the market today.
- • Repairing items yourself is a good way to learn new skills. You can buy replacement parts for all kinds of products. Often the manufacturer will have a list of businesses carrying replacement parts for their products.
Rent
- • Renting makes sense if you only need to use something once in a while, outfit a space (home or office) or perform an activity (work or recreational) for the short term. Renting saves money and conserve resources, and many rental businesses will deliver items and pick them up when you’re done with them, making moving that much easier.
- • Renting helps you test before you buy. Sporting equipment, musical instruments, and home entertainment products can all be rented to determine whether you want to make the long term commitment.
- • Renting saves storage space and maintenance costs. And you don’t need to remember where you put the thing the last time you used it! Many rental shops will help you with hands-on instruction on how to use what you are renting.
Buy, sell or donate used goods
- • Buy used from a secondhand store or consignment shop to save money. Buying used also helps the environment by keeping usable goods available and out of the landfill, and by reducing the resources required to manufacture and distribute new products. Many used goods stores will take items in trade, saving you the effort of getting rid of something you don't want while you pick up something useful at the same time.
- • Donating the useful goods you no longer need will help charities raise funds for their causes. Other donation services provide items directly to those that need them. That jacket you no longer wear may seem useless to you, but might keep someone warm and dry - no small feat in Seattle!
