Proposed Green Fee
As part of city efforts to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, Mayor Nickels and the Seattle City Council proposed a 20-cent per bag Green Fee to take effect January 1, 2009.
However, sufficient signatures have been gathered by opponents for a referendum to place the issue on the ballot for a vote, most likely as part of the primary election in August, 2009. As a result, SPU did not implement the green fee in January.
SPU encourages customers to reduce waste and make the right choice for the environment by taking reusable bags with them when they go shopping.
