Keep Garbage Out of Apartment Recycling
When garbage is put in the same container as recycling, the recycling becomes contaminated, and must be collected, and charged, as garbage. To prevent contamination:
1. Educate your tenants. You will get educational materials to give your tenants when your service starts. If you run out, or you need help solving an ongoing contamination problem, call your recycling collector or SPU Solid Waste Customer Service at (206) 684-7665.
2. Monitor your recycling containers. Spend some time each week to make sure your recycling containers are not contaminated. Or, recruit a resident to be a Friend of Recycling (FOR). FORs monitor contamination and help their neighbors learn about what they can recycle. You can also get a 1-time $100 rebate on your garbage bill if a resident volunteers to be an FOR.
3. Make it easy to recycle. Be sure the recycling area is well-lighted and free of debris. In larger buildings, consider setting up a sorting station on each floor. You might have your Friend of Recycling volunteer(s) take the pre-sorted materials to the central recycling container location.
4. Secure your recycling area. Keep passers by from putting garbage in your recycling by locking your containers or recycling area. Make sure that contractors have access to the containers for collection.
