Special & Unacceptable Items at Recycling & Disposal Stations
The items listed below are either not accepted or require special preparation or instructions at the Recycling & Disposal Stations. Please use the suggested alternative for unacceptable items to ensure safe disposal.
Asbestos
Not accepted. Call the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) at (206) 343-8800.
Ashes
Must be completely cooled and bagged, boxed or wetted.
Barrels, drums, garbage cans, tanks (plastic, stainless steel)
Cut empty barrels and drums in half. Sealed drums are not accepted. Drums that held hazardous waste, and propane or compressed gas tanks are unacceptable.
Carpet rolls
Ask the floor attendant for unloading instructions.
Computer monitors
These contain heavy metals – see the Take It Back Network for disposal options.
Contaminated soil
Large quantities can only be accepted with a Waste Clearance form from the Health Department. Call (206) 296-4633 for information. Waste Clearance is required for material that may be dangerous or hazardous, or has a make-up that is unknown.
Dead animals
Over 15 pounds not accepted. Call Animal Control at (206) 386-4254.
Duct work or pipes
Not accepted with or without asbestos.
Dusty materials - sawdust, etc.
Must be double bagged , boxed or wetted.
Excrement - Animal excrement, disposable diapers (excrement removed), etc.
Must be in a leak proof container, such as double plastic bagged and securely tied.
Explosives, ammunition, or weapons
Not accepted. Call 911.
Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes
Residential light bulbs and tubes can be disposed of free of charge at the Household Hazardous Waste sites. Business light bulb disposal options can be found at King County’s Waste Directory.
Fuel or oil tanks
Not accepted. See the Yellow Pages under "Tanks-Cleaning" or "Tanks-Removal".
Furnaces, furnace parts, ducting, or boilers
Not accepted. Call Puget Sound Clean Air Agency at (206) 343-8800 for information on disposing of heating systems. Some scrap yards accept asbestos free heating systems. See the Yellow Pages under "Scrap Metal-Process & Recycle".
Hazardous Waste
Not accepted. Items with Caution or Warning labels must be disposed of at a special facility. For items from your home, see Hazardous Waste below or call
the Hazards Line at (206) 296-4692.
For items from your workplace, call the Business Waste Line at (206) 296-3976.
Hot ashes
Must be cooled, then bagged, boxed or wetted.
Infectious Waste, untreated
Not accepted. Call the Health Department at (206) 296-4831.
Large items
Accepted up to 8 feet in length and 200 pounds in weight.
Logs, poles, etc.
Must not exceed 8 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Untreated wood, logs and branches can be disposed of as wood or yard waste at a lower cost.
Net (fishing net, etc.)
Ask the floor attendant for unloading instructions.
Radioactive waste
Not accepted. Call 1-800-NUCLEAR for information, or call 911in case of emergency.
Refrigerators
Any size but must be emptied out and have doors removed.
Rocks, rubble, slabs
Must not exceed 200 pounds and/or 2 cubic feet per piece.
Rope, line, cable and strapping material
Ask the floor attendant for unloading instructions.
Sealed drums or barrels
Not accepted.
Sewage
Not accepted. Call the Health Department at (206) 296-4632.
Televisions
Not accepted. These contain heavy metals. See the Take It Back Network for disposal options.
Treated wood
Large loads can only be accepted with a Waste Clearance form from the Health Department. Call (206) 296-4633 for information. Waste Clearance is required for material that may be dangerous or hazardous, or has a make-up that is unknown.
Yard waste
Must be disposed of as Yard Waste.
