Commercial Solid Waste Rates FAQ
Are solid waste rates increasing?
Solid waste rates for commercial customers will increase by 6.7%. The new rates will take effect January 1, 2008.
When were these rates adopted?
The new rates were passed by Seattle City Council on October 1, 2007 and signed by Mayor Greg Nickels on October 10, 2006, under City Ordinance 122262 and 22256.
Why is this rate increase necessary?
This rate increase is necessary to:
- • Ensure that the Solid Waste Fund meets it financial policy targets for net income and cash balances.
- • Fund capital improvements at our transfer stations in order to provide solid waste services at lower long-term cost and with fewer impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods, traffic, and the environment.
- • Design and implement a Waste Reduction and Recycling program outlined by City Council Resolution 30990.
- • Improve recycling services in parks and at the transfer stations
Will there be a change in taxes?
The tax rates will not change. However, beginning in 2008 taxes will be incorporated into monthly solid waste charges, and will not be itemized on bills.
