Choosing a Dumpster Size

You can estimate the size of dumpster you will need based on the number of apartment units in the building.

    1. Write down the number of 1 bedroom apartments. This is the number of cans of garbage 1 bedroom apartments generate per week.
    2. Multiply the number of 2+ bedroom apartments by 1.5. This is the number of cans of garbage 2+ bedroom apartments generate per week.
    3. Add the number of cans of garbage that your 1 and 2+ bedroom apartments generate together. This is the total number of cans that your building generates per week.
    4. Divide this number by 6 or 7 to get the number of cubic yards of garbage your building creates. Dumpsters are sized by cubic yard. If your building has 28 1 bedroom apartments, it creates 28 cans of garbage per week, or 4 cubic yards.
    5. If you have a compaction system, divide the number of cubic yards by 4 to get the number of compacted cubic yards most compactors will achieve. The building with 4 cubic yards of garbage would have 1 cubic yard of compacted garbage.
Remember that you will make a final decision about dumpster size, location and collection frequency with the Seattle Public Utilities Inspector.
