Maintenance Inspections
If you own a stormwater detention, treatment and conveyance system, you need to maintain your system and inspect it regularly to prevent flooding, avoid property damage, and protect surface water quality. The information here can help you maintain your system as required by federal and state laws.
About the inspections
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) carries out regular inspections of all private detention, treatment and conveyance systems.
This inspection process is in accordance with federal and state laws (including the Clean Water Act of 1987,) and Chapter 22.800 of the Seattle Municipal code. Under Chapter 22.800 of the Seattle Municipal Code, owners of private drainage systems are responsible for maintaining these systems to ensure that they continue to function over the long term.
The private drainage inspection program is part of the City’s overall Stormwater Management Plan, developed to comply with the requirements of the City’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
