Stormwater Facility Credit

The Stormwater Facility Credit was developed to recognize that stormwater flowing through privately-owned flow control or treatment systems has less impact than stormwater that directly enters the City's stormwater system, creeks, lakes, or Puget Sound. If your property has a fully functioning, well-maintained stormwater management system, you may qualify for a rate credit on your drainage bills starting in 2009.

Maintenance Requirements
As the owner of the stormwater facility system you are responsible for ensuring that the system is operating properly and in accordance with the Seattle Stormwater, Grading & Drainage code. SPU will conduct periodic inspections to verify the maintenance of your facility for continued receipt of the Stormwater Facility Credit. Learn more about
facility credit requirements, stormwater code requirements and maintenance inspections.

Single Family Residences
To qualify for a facility credit, stormwater management facilities must be designed to meet City Stormwater, Drainage, and Erosion Code requirements. City code requires stormwater management facilities in the case of the development, or re-development of fairly large areas of impervious surface (at least 2,000 square feet for flow control and at least 5,000 square feet for stormwater treatment). Consequently, the stormwater facilities which qualify for credit would not be typically found on single family residential sites.

However, you can find other ways to better manage stormwater on your property through SPU’s Residential RainWise Program. The RainWise Program is an educational and technical assistance program to empower residential customers to adopt practices and technologies that reduce stormwater flows and improve their quality. Look for this program starting in 2009.
