Street Sweep Project

The Street Sweep Pilot Project Ended June 31, 2007

The Street Sweep Team thanks Southeast, West Seattle and Duwamish Industrial Area neighbors for moving their cars every other week for the past year. Their participation allowed us to collect information needed to determine if street sweeping helps make Seattle’s waterways cleaner and healthier for people and fish.

We will publish a study of our findings on this website in the fall. To receive an e-mailed copy of the summary once it becomes available, please sign up on the e-mail reminder service.

Seattle Street Sweep is a pilot project to evaluate best practices and new technology to improve the health of Seattle’s waters.

Every day, pollution from cars, lawns and businesses flows from neighborhood streets into our waterways. Recent research indicates that street sweeping twice a month can remove pollution before it reaches these waters.

Seattle Public Utilities is committed to protecting, and improving water quality in our waterways. We are working to find best practices and new technologies to benefit our environment. This Street Sweep pilot project in the Southeast Seattle (Columbia City, Lakewood\Seward Park & Genessee), West Seattle, and Duwamish Watershed neighborhoods will help the City determine if street sweeping is a good addition to our water quality toolbox, helping make our waterways cleaner and healthier for people and fish.

How can I help?
Street dirt and debris will be removed from designated streets in the
Southeast Seattle (Columbia City, Lakewood\Seward Park & Genessee Neighborhoods), West Seattle, and Duwamish Industrial Area neighborhoods during the year-long pilot project. If your street has been chosen for street sweeping (see the locations listed on this site), the City needs your help.

In an effort to reduce the impact of sweeping on you and your neighbors, during the day when many cars are gone, we will sweep one side of the street one week, and return the following week to sweep the other.

To make this program work, Seattle Public Utilities needs your participation by adhering to the Street Sweep schedule. You will be asked to keep your side of the street free from parked cars, two days per month. A Street Sweep schedule was sent to you with explicitly defined days in which you will be asked to park on one side of the street.
