Spotlight on Carol Griffin

Where she works: Longfellow Creek

Time as a Site Steward: Carol is a new site steward who started 6 months ago.

Mode of work: Weekly site visits to remove invasive weeds and pick up trash

How she got involved in the Creek Steward Program: After retiring, Carol was looking for something to do in her spare time. She came across a Creek Steward brochure while searching for pottery classes at the Delridge Community Center this summer, and immediately inquired about how to get involved.

What creek stewardship means to her: We all must do our part to take care of the planet, and Carol is “delighted” to do her bit.

What Carol does when she’s not battling blackberry: Now retired, Carol spends her time painting and doing pottery, and remains active in her community as a volunteer.

The most rewarding aspect of creek stewardship: Carol appreciates the physical demands of taking care of her site and loves the opportunity to meet new people. Also, Carol’s work as a site steward has inspired and energized her to revitalize her own yard into a native landscape.

What keeps her going out every month: Carol says she is having much more fun than anticipated pulling weeds and picking up garbage, and loves the new energy she’s found since she began this summer.

Carol’s most hated weed: Although she finds it difficult to cut down any plants, the way morning glory and nightshade wrap around trees and shrubs is quite disconcerting.

Most beloved native: Carol is a true tree-lover.

Memorable Creek Steward Moment: Carol recalls one morning when a young student was sampling the water quality of the creek for a class project. Two biologists who happened to be walking along the creek stopped to help and share their knowledge about the unique riparian habitat. Carol reveled at how accessible habitat along Longfellow Creek facilitates bringing together members of the community, and she is proud to be a part of that.
