Spotlight on Darrell Dobson and Jude Siefker

Where they work: Taylor Creek, Deadhorse Canyon

Time as a Site Steward: Ten Years as of February 2006!

Mode of work: Leading monthly work parties

How they got involved in the Creek Steward Program: After being recruited to discuss the sewage leak in the neighboring creek, Darrell and Jude became motivated to take on a more active role in the health of the creek and of the whole ravine through which it ran. The Friends of Taylor Creek group was formed right around this time, Darrell and Jude joined in on the ground floor and basically “grew into” creek stewardship.

What creek stewardship means to them: Creek stewardship means caring for the creek, whether in good shape or bad, so that hopefully, one day one hundred years from now, someone can enjoy the restored creek complete with native wildlife that you helped bring back.

What Darrel and Jude do when they’re not battling knotweed: Jude runs a business as a professional guardian while Darrell is retired from working for United Airlines.

The most rewarding aspect of creek stewardship: Seeing that tree you planted last year grow a foot! Watching the changes from year to year, as an area once degraded becomes lush with urban wildlife.

What keeps them going out every month: Creek Stewardship is something that Darrell and Jude can do together that has brought them closer.

Jude’s most hated weed: “Oh, #1 has to be ivy…but then there’s…”

Darrel’s most hated weed: “…Cherry Laurel, Holly, Blackberry, Morning Glory…!”

Most beloved native: All of them! Forced to pick? Any of the trees from Douglas Fir to Western Red Cedar.

Memorable Creek Steward Moment: Working with a Boy’s and Girl’s club in the pouring rain on a rather chilly day, Darrell and Jude spied a young boy with mud smeared across his cheeks, one hand holding a cookie and the other a cup of hot chocolate, wearing a big smile along with a garbage bag, having a ball!
