Landsburg Improvements Project

Project Overview

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is currently planning to upgrade the Landsburg Facility in 2014.  These upgrades will improve how SPU operates onsite water systems and how the public accesses and uses the onsite recreational area.

Improvements and Benefits

The project consists of the two major improvements:

More Efficient Water System Operations – Currently, onsite water system operations occur in separate, outdated buildings.  After this project, a new Operations Center will house all onsite operations in one efficient location.

More Accessible and User-Friendly Recreational Area – During the project, SPU will improve how patrons access and use the publicly-accessible recreational area near the facility entrance, specifically adding the following features:

  • Paved parking area with ADA accommodations
  • New walkway from parking to recreational area
  • Circular pathway surrounding recreational area
  • Artwork that will be integrated with the surrounding
  • Permanent toilet facilities
  • Native plant life additions

Status and Schedule

As of February 2013, the project is nearing 30% design completion.  After design is complete, construction on the recreational area will begin and last approximately three months.  SPU is working with design consultant KPG, Inc., and contractor Lydig Construction, Inc.  Below is the estimated project schedule:

60% Design Completion

Second Quarter, 2013

90% Design Completion

Third Quarter, 2013

100% Design Completion

Fourth Quarter, 2013

Construction Begins

First Quarter, 2014

SPU has completed an environmental review of the project and issued a Determination of Non-Significance (pdf) as required under Washington’s State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).

Temporary Construction Impacts

During construction, recreational area patrons should expect the following temporary impacts:

  • Limited access to parking and recreational areas via roadway or waterway ( Cedar River)
  • Reduced open hours or temporary closure of the recreational area
  • Minimal dust, noise, and traffic related to construction activity
