Food waste can easily be composted in your backyard. Be sure to use a rodent-proof method, and do not home-compost meat, fish or dairy. These items can go in your food and yard waste cart.

SPU recommends home composting and/or the curbside food and yard waste cart, instead of the garbage disposal, for environmental and cost reasons. Garbage disposals use a lot of water, and take up valuable capacity at the sewage treatment plant.
