Look ahead

  • On Monday, Sept. 11, the contractor will resume work in the Marion Street and Western Avenue intersection. Work will be concentrated on the northeast and southeast corners of the intersection for future curb ramp improvements. This work can cause intense vibrations. If your business or residence is near the intersection, please take extra caution to protect fragile or breakable items and remove items that could fall from shelves or other surfaces.
  • Traffic will be merged into one lane on Marion Street around work zones.

This includes replacing some curb ramps and sections of sidewalk where the project disturbed. This project does not provide a full street restoration.

  • Utility work occurred at Madison Street and Western Avenue. There were temporary traffic restrictions during daytime hours.

The following impacts in the project area were planned for March 4 – 10:

  • Work occurred to connect large cross water mains at Columbia Street March 4 – 6, beginning late Saturday night to Sunday evening. Activities included connecting services, using a saw to cut pipes, pumps, and generators, and daytime pavement breaking. Night work occurred in order to minimize water service disruption to customers.
  • Work to restore the roadway began at 5 a.m. each day on Western Avenue between Spring Street and Yesler Way under a noise variance. The work was scheduled early in the morning to reduce traffic impacts. Crews worked to minimize noise to the greatest extent possible.
  • Utility work occurred at Madison Street and Yesler Way.

The following impacts in the project area were planned for February 26 – March 3:

  • Work occurred around the clock beginning Friday morning through early Sunday morning on Western Avenue at Madison Street. Activities included pavement breaking (daytime only), connecting services and using a saw to cut pipes, pumps and generators.
  • Night work occurred Friday and Saturday night as crews connected some customers to the new water main. All affected customers were contacted in advance temporary water shutdowns.
  • Vactor trucks were used intermittently throughout the day.
  • Madison Street was reduced to one westbound lane Friday, Saturday and early Sunday morning.
  • Weekday work on Western Avenue between Columbia Street and Yesler Way began at 5 a.m. each day to prepare for service connections. Work was scheduled early in the morning to reduce impacts from temporary water shutdowns.
  • Work included using a saw to cut pipe.

  • Some tree branches were trimmed on the east side of Western Avenue between Yesler Way and Spring Street to allow construction vehicles and equipment to pass and to avoid damage to trees.

April to May 2015

In late-April and May, crews started the emergency work by drilling (potholing) along Western Avenue to confirm the locations of critical utilities.
